THE WAY

HOME

The goal for this big-box store redesign was to create a homeless rehabilitation center that was a safe and encouraging space for individuals facing homelessness. Unlike typical homeless shelters, this homeless center requires residents to earn their stay through work opportunities within the center. This “earn your stay” approach allows residents to feel a sense of pride and responsibility within their temporary home. This center has many amenities including a daycare, tutoring center, teaching kitchen, clinic, and a retail space. It is important for residents to feel at home and have their basic needs met while in this temporary living space. In order to acheive this, natural elements, comforting colors, and soft furnishings were utilized. Since the existing building lacked access to natural light, it was imperative that adequate artificial lighting was used in multiple avenues. Another important design element was implementing ceiling treatments that created a sense of grounding within the space. All of these design elements came together to create a space that felt sophisticated yet comfortable, allowing residents to flourish in their time spent at The Way Home.
